"Home and Student is an indispensable package for anyone who wants the three most important programs."
Rosie Khdir
It’s all in the name really, Home and Student edition is Office 2010 stripped down to the key pieces of software, and unsurprisingly it’s the perfect edition for students and home users.
It will come with Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2010 as well as OneNote 2010.
What we like best
Great new features in PowerPoint include being able to embed videos into a slide, and even edit them with cuts, transitions and crops. You can also now do the same with audio files.
In Word there are great new picture editing capabilities, allowing you to crop and change the colours. It’s not going to replace Photoshop but it’s really useful if you want to make your work more professional and slick.
Excel’s bold new feature is Sparklines; these are tiny graphs that fit inside each cell and can be used to show quickly and easily how data has changed over time.
OneNote is a great piece of software for quickly taking down notes, posting in graphics and being creative before you tidy it into a new project in Word for example.
Good news for everyone who didn’t like the ‘Office button’ in Office 2007, the file tab is back. The ribbon is also now customisable to your heart’s content across all the programs.
What we like least
The only quibble with this product is that the interface and tools may take a while to get accustomed to.
Some people may also find the lack of a “back” key in word quite frustrating; when clicking on links in large word documents it can be difficult to find your way back.
Home and Student is an indispensable package for anyone who wants the three most important programs and doesn’t need email capabilities of Outlook or planning with SharePoint.
