"Six Gb of RAM, and 500 Gb of hard drive storage - for a laptop in this price range, the Acer Aspire 5750 is carrying some serious heft"
Matthias Scherer
The Acer Aspire 5750 is a mid-range, mid-sized laptop which is well equipped to handle most everyday tasks and sports a few surprisingly high specs to switch things up. Do these features serve to cover up weaknesses in other areas or are they included on their own merits? PC Site has a look.
What we like best
The Aspire 5750 is priced wallet-friendly, but that doesn’t mean that its design is slapdash or even below par. In fact, its plastic matte lid looks quite pleasant – no light reflecting off of it, but no annoying fingerprints either. There’s a barely detectable but definitely tangible texture on top of the lid, which offers some additional grip without feeling overly rugged.
The hardware specs are very impressive: up to 6 Gb of RAM are available, there is 500 Gb of hard drive storage to play with, and the swish Sandy Bridge Intel Core i5 processor supplies the firepower. For a laptop in this price range, the Acer Aspire 5750 is carrying some serious heft.
As well as being well-stacked in the CPU, RAM and hard drive departments, the Aspire 5750 offers good connectivity: HDMI and VGA outputs are available, and there is a USB 3.0 port for super-fast data transfer.
The keys are generously spaced (despite a number pad being included) and feel smooth and responsive, lending itself to quick and accurate typing.
What we like least
It seems like there has been a certain degree of compromise with the Acer Aspire 5750 – while there is a USB 3.0 port, there is no Bluetooth connectivity. Similarly, the spacious RAM and hard drive specs come at a price in terms of portability: 2.6 kg ain’t exactly lightweight.
As is the case with many mid-range laptops, the glossy screen suffers from poor viewing angles, reflection issues and a slight but nevertheless distinct lack of contrast. It will most likely disappoint if you intend to bring it to work and share a presentation with your team members, or if you want to use it to watch a film with some friends.
This is a solid effort by Acer – no more, no less. While some attention-grabbing specs might seem persuasive at first, there will be some frustration when it comes to screen and audio quality as well as a lack of Bluetooth options. Nevertheless, if you’re after a reliable and presentable budget laptop, there are worse places to start with than the Acer Aspire 5750.
